Foreigner questioned over bike incident
A Brazilian student is under investigation for allegedly riding a motorcycle through a red light without a license or number plate, police in Jing’an District told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
He could be detained for up to 15 days for riding the motorcycle without a license and fined 900 yuan (US$140) for all three offenses. If he is detained, his visa could be canceled, which would mean he would have to leave the country within 10 days after he is released, police said.
Police contacted him last Thursday after tracing him down using information gleaned from surveillance footage.
The footage shows that he had a passenger on his motorcycle at the time and sped up when a police officer tried to stop him. The officer was nearly knocked down by a car while in pursuit.
In an interview with Shanghai TV, the student, whose name police declined to reveal, said in Chinese that he didn’t know that a license is required to operate a motorcycle and that he would have stopped if he had seen the policeman.
