Foreign sailor found, sent home

A UKRAINIAN sailor was put on a plane out of the country on Wednesday, after evading his shipmates and customs officials for almost a day, officers at the Chongming Exit-Entry Frontier Inspection Station said yesterday.

The seamen, surnamed Vitalii, was from the cargo ship Lord Byron, which was scheduled to leave the city on Wednesday. The vessel contacted the inspection station at dawn on Tuesday to report the sailor missing. Vitalii was found by his colleagues about 6pm, but then ran away again.

Later, with the help of footage from surveillance cameras, customs officers tracked him down to a bar and held him for questioning.

He was put on a plane and flew out of the city at 1pm on Wednesday.
