Floral tributes at Chen Yi Square

SHANGHAI residents joined relatives and friends yesterday laying flowers on the steps where the stampede happened.

The Huangpu District government also cordoned off an area at Chen Yi Square for floral tributes. Chen Yi was Shanghai’s first mayor after new China was founded in 1949 before becoming vice premier of China in 1954. The square, at the crossing of Nanjing and Zhongshan roads, features a 2-meter-tall bronze statue of Chen.

Visitors placed flowers in front of the statue and lit candles.

University student Chen Xiaohang placed chrysanthemums at the memorial site in memory of the sister of a high-school classmate who died.

A resident surnamed Zhen said: “My heart was broken after hearing so many young people, especially a 12-year-old boy, passed away.”

Extra traffic police were on duty at the Bund yesterday as there were still large crowds of visitors in the area.
