Flights delayed, canceled due to thunderstorm

Over 150 flights have been canceled and about 200 were delayed at Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports by noon due to thunder and rainstorm.

The air traffic controller issued a red alert for flight delays, the top of its four-tier alert system, for both airports around noon and predicated massive flight delays that were supposed to last till 2pm.

The Hongqiao airport was the worst hit as 136 flights were canceled and over 100 were delayed at noon.

"I was told by the airline that my flight has been canceled when I was heading to the airport on Metro Line 10," said a passenger surnamed Xu who booked a China Southern Airlines' ticket to southeast Guangzhou.

The Guangzhou-based airline issued a massive flight delay alert to its passengers due to the impacts of weather around 11am.

Passengers were told to check the official website of Shanghai Airport Authority and their carriers about their flight information before heading to the airports, the authority said.
