Fears that blaze hero may lose 9 fingers

A 25-YEAR-OLD designer who suffered serious burns while alerting neighbors after a fire broke out in their residential building last month may need to have nine of his fingers and a number of toes amputated, his father said yesterday.

Zhou Zhengpei, father of Wang Haibin, told Shanghai Daily that he was told by doctors on Tuesday that nine of his son’s fingers might be amputated, with only his right thumb remaining.

Ruijin Hospital, where Wang has been receiving treatment since the blaze in Huacao Town in Minhang District on June 16, confirmed he may lose fingers and toes.

“It’s hard for me to accept the news,” Zhou said. “Haibin is optimistic about his recovery and I daren’t tell him the latest news yet.”

“My son was a designer and his fingers were very dextrous,” he added.

“If he loses his fingers, he will also lose the capability of self-care, not to mention his working ability.”

“It will definitely cause huge damage to his self-esteem and his attitude toward his future life.”

Ruijin is inviting hand surgery specialists from Huashan Hospital to discuss Wang’s condition and see how they can minimize surgery, the hospital said.

Zhou said he would tell his son the outcome of the meeting between the doctors — whether good or bad.

“I wish there would be a miracle and that he could keep all his fingers, although I know the chances are slim,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wang has received more than 2.6 million yuan (US$419,000) in insurance payouts and gifts and donations in recognition of his bravery, a district government official said.

The young designer suffered more than 80 percent burns when a fire broke out at 1:45am at a moped which was being charged at the ground floor of the six-story building in Huacao Town, where Wang lives with his family.

Wang, who lives on the fifth floor, ran up and down the six-floor building to alert another 11 households and opened the locked security door at the entrance of the building.

As Wang is still in a critical condition, he is kept in intensive care and his parents have only seen him several times.
