Family of 3 killed in scooter shop blaze

A COUPLE and their 3-year-old son died in blaze in the family’s moped and scooter shop in Minhang District in the early hours of yesterday.

The cause of the fire at Dongchuan Road is still under investigation, said police.

According to officers, the father, surnamed Zhao, had bought a takeaway snack at around 12:30am and was sharing it with his wife and son when the fire broke out.

It was reported that the couple tried to fight the flames and the family became trapped in the shop. Their bodies were discovered by firefighters.

More than 10 damaged mopeds were found outside the premises, apparently moved by the couple in a bid to save their stock.

Other mopeds and parts were piled inside the shop, said a witness.

Neighbors said that 38-year-old Zhao, and his wife, whose name was not given but who was said to be in her 20s, seldom lived in their store.

Meanwhile, on Saturday afternoon, a fire broke out at an old residential building on Shanxi Road N. in Zhabei District.

The fire started about 2pm, engulfing an apartment on the third floor of a shikumen building.

Police took away a man in his 30s for questioning.

Neighbors said he previously threatened to start a fire.
