Facelift for historic airport villa

THE East China air traffic authority will renovate a historic villa it owns near Hongqiao international airport after local housing authority said it was in shabby condition.

The East China Air Traffic Management Bureau under the Civil Aviation Administration of China has invited Mingyue Architectural Designing Institute to renovate the villa on 1 Konggang No.3 Road, the housing management bureau of Changning District said.

The institute has been allocated about 30 million yuan (US$4.4 million) for renovation.

The villa, which was originally owned by a British diplomat in the 1920s, was listed as a protected cultural relic unit in 2004.

“The air traffic authority has submitted a renovation plan to the local cultural heritage authority for approval,” an official with the housing bureau said.

The 350-square meter villa near Hongqiao Airport combines Beijing-style architecture with British countryside layout.

The blue brick-structured and tile-roofed house has a traditional courtyard. Two stone lions sit in front of the gate. Several windows were built on the rooftop — a traditional design style known as the “tiger window.”

It later served as an activity center for retired local air traffic bureau officials but was then abandoned for years.

Part of the structure was damaged due to lack of protection, an official with the housing bureau said.

According to the city’s culture heritage protection regulation, the owners of non-government-owned protected historic buildings should repair and maintain the structures.

The owner has to hire a professional company to restore the building.

The renovation plans have to be approved by the cultural heritage authority.
