Facelift for Shikumen neighborhood

THE city government has begun renovating century-old Shikumen residential buildings in northeast part of Shanghai to restore their historic look and improve living conditions for tenants, officials said yesterday.
Workers are repainting the facades and roofs of the buildings the original color in the Huisanli neighborhood on Huoshan Road. After that, they will retile the kitchens and toilets, as well as upgrade the plumbing and wiring.
The project, which will be completed by the end of October, will benefit 73 households, said Xu Weiyou, the project supervisor.
“After the completion, water leakage will be eliminated and the kitchens and toilets, which we have had a lot of complaints about from residents, will be greatly improved,” Xu said. For a long time, the city’s historic Shikumen (stone gate) buildings have been under threat of demolition and many residents have been relocated because of increasingly shabby living conditions.
But that is changing. The government now plans to renovate 18,000 square meters of old residential space across Yangpu District, home to quite a few Shikumen buildings, by the end of the year.
