Ex-vice mayor in bribery probe

FORMER vice mayor of Shanghai Ai Baojun is under investigation for alleged bribe-taking, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) announced yesterday.
Ai has been put under “coercive measures,” which may include bail, residential surveillance and detention. The SPP did not specify what measures had been taken against him.
The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) announced its investigation into Ai in November.
Ai was expelled from the CPC and removed from office for “serious discipline offenses” including accepting bribes, trading power for sex and embezzling public assets, according to a CCDI announcement on January 19.
When an investigation was launched on November 10 last year, the 55-year-old became the most senior Shanghai official to be investigated for corruption since Chen Liangyu, then Party chief, was jailed for 18 years for bribery in 2008.
Ai, who is a former member of the Standing Committee of the Party’s Shanghai committee, is also accused of failing to cooperate with the investigation.
Ai was previously director of the Shanghai pilot Free Trade Zone, China’s first FTZ, which was set up in 2013 with the aim of being a testing ground for economic and governance reforms. He had been one of several Shanghai vice mayors since 2007, holding the portfolio for development and planning.
The anti-graft commission said Ai, from northeast China’s Liaoning Province, continued to flout the law even after the 18th National Congress of the Party in 2012 when Xi Jinping, newly elected general secretary of the Party’s Central Committee, highlighted the problem of corrupt officials.
