Expats want more space for cycling and sidewalks

LACK of cycling lanes and pedestrian walking space were among the major complaints of the expatriate community in Shanghai.

A survey conducted by Shanghai University of Sport found 54.55 percent of foreigners were not happy with the amount of sidewalk available in the city. The dissatisfaction rate against the number of exercising facilities at public parks was 45.46 percent.

Over 330 foreigners living in Shanghai were interviewed for the survey.

A good 43.18 percent of them said there was not enough public venues for group sporting activities like playing badminton, football, basketball, while 27.27 percent felt the city should make more spaces available for cycling which was good for both exercise and transportation.

But many of them gave the thumbs-up to the city’s efforts in organizing large-scale sports events and activities.

Nearly 60 percent said they watch big sports events held in Shanghai. The annual Formula 1 China Grand Prix (20.69 percent) and the ATP Shanghai Rolex Masters (20.69 percent) were the most followed events.

A quarter of those surveyed said transportation to the venues needed to be improved.

About 30 percent said they spent time in gyms and swimming pools at least once a week but there were complaints about the sanitary conditions in the venues, especially in shower rooms.

Some foreigners wanted more sports-themed parks built in the city to attract tourists as well as to raise children’s interest in sports.

Interestingly, some foreigners expressed their support and interest toward the group dancing activities which are usually held in parks and neighborhoods.

Last month, the government promised to build more public sports facilities and develop industries related to sports to make the city into “world famous sports city” by 2025.
