Ex-EVCard employee ‘stole car from firm’

A former employee of the car rental operator EVCard has been detained for allegedly stealing a rented car from the company.

Police said yesterday that the suspect, surnamed Ying, allegedly used his company pass to drive away the car and disabled its GPS system so that the company couldn’t locate the vehicle.

EVCard told Fengxian police that it had lost contact with the car on June 23 in the district and had been looking for it until an employee spotted the car being charged at a parking spot on Jinbi Road on September 13. But the GPS was no longer in the car, police said.

Initial investigation, including talks to local residents and searching for the car through street surveillance cameras, didn’t yield a result, but after the company revealed the GPS installation in its cars isn't at all obvious, police started to comb through the company’s employees for suspects.

Ying, a former employee who was in charge of car maintenance for the company, soon emerged as a prime suspect because he lived in Fengxian and stopped working for the company last June, police said.

He owned up to the theft and said he wanted a car for himself after leaving EVCard and used a company card he didn’t hand back to take a car near Jinqian Highway. He then dismantled its GPS, police added.
