Electric car plate scheme curbed
ELECTRIC car buyers looking to benefit from a free car plate scheme must now first prove they can install charging posts at their parking spaces, Shanghai Television reported yesterday.
Shanghai has been encouraging environmentally friendly vehicles through policies including free car plates.
Usually, only limited numbers of plates are auctioned each month, going for 73,000 yuan (US$11,678).
However, some management companies do not allow car owners to install charging posts in residential communities.
So some hybrid powered car owners use petrol instead of electricity — at odds with the point of the scheme.
Now the city economic and information commission says that applicants must provide third-party evidence that they can install a charging post.
