Elderly man dies in downtown blaze

AN elderly man died in a blaze yesterday evening in a residential complex in downtown Jing’an District that is popular with expats.

The fire broke out in a high-rise at the One Park Avenue community, near the intersection of Xinzha Road and Changde Road.

Jing’an police said they received a report at 6:26pm and that firefighters brought an 83-year-old man from a burning apartment at the 37th floor, but that he was pronounced dead in hospital.

The apartment at the top floor had been undergoing decoration, Shanghai Television reported.

The man’s wife is staying in a nearby hotel and had asked him to cook himself dumplings for dinner, it reported.

Residents in the building were evacuated and roads around the community closed, police said.

The blaze was extinguished at 6:50pm and the cause is under investigation.

One Park Avenue is popular with expats, partly due to its convenient downtown location.

This is the third fatal fire involving seniors in three days.

An 83-year-old man died on Wednesday in a fire at his home at Tanggu Road in Hongkou District, though his wife was rescued.

A couple in their 80s were killed in fire at their home on Bijiang Road in Minhang District on Tuesday.
