Donations of US$25m received

THE Shanghai Charity Foundation raised 170 million yuan (US$25 million) from the public during the city’s year-end monthlong charity event which ended on Saturday, the foundation said.

Eight major partners including the foundation involved in the event, themed “Greatest Love under the Sky,” gave away 98 million yuan and various products to around 186,000 needy people.

On Saturday morning, 80 private business owners donated over 5 million yuan to the foundation’s four-year-old fund to finance 50 poverty and disaster relief programs. So far 23 million yuan have been given to the fund, according to the foundation.

Thousands of volunteers were out walking on the city’s streets on Saturday to seek donations for the foundation. In Hongkou District, 700 high school pupils and international students from the Shanghai Foreign Studies University sought donations from the public.

The Shanghai Youth League joined Saturday’s charity event and donated 280,000 yuan to the city’s college students who are from low-income families.
