Diners horrified as rat drops in for lunch

A restaurant has shut its doors after an uninvited guest ruined lunch for a group of colleagues.

A downtown Wagas outlet voluntarily suspended operations yesterday after the diners complained that a rat dropped onto a member of their party while they were having lunch on Sunday.

The Huangpu District Market Supervision and Management Bureau has ordered the outlet to carry out thorough cleaning and pest-control work before reopening and said it would face severe penalties if any hygiene deficiencies are found by its inspectors.

One of the diners, surnamed Li, said the mouse suddenly dropped onto his colleague’s neck from out of nowhere, “slipped through” her arm before landing on a plate on the table as they were dining at the Wagas outlet in a shopping plaza on Huangpi Rd N.

"It was the most disgusting dining experience I have ever had,” Li said.

“My colleague was very frightened and vomited because she was not aware it was a live rat and used her hands to remove it,” he told Shanghai Daily.

Li, who identified himself as "Mr Li does not like eating rat” in Chinese on the social-networking site Weibo, posted photos and a short video clip of the incident online.

Li accused the outlet of failing to keep the restaurant clean, alleging that the mouse, which was killed by an employee with a broom, came from the nearby kitchen.

“It is very likely the rat ran from the kitchen,” insisted Li, who said he was not impressed with the attitude of management.

“They had no sense of food safety when I asked about relevant laws,” he alleged.

The restaurant waived the party’s bill, but Li said he and his five colleagues were considering legal action.

Wagas Shanghai, which has more than 30 outlets in the city that are still operating as usual, said an investigation found that the rat entered the restaurant after running down a pipe from an adjacent shop that was undergoing decorating work.
