Detained academic not present at fatal test
AN academic who is being detained over a blast at a wax factory that killed three people, including a master’s student under his supervision, was not present at a test of “dangerous materials,” the Qingpu District government told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
Zhang Jianyu, an assistant professor at East China University of Science and Technology who is a shareholder of the Shanghai Joule Wax Company, took Li Peng, his student, to the factory last Monday morning with the materials. He arranged for two workers at the factory to assist the student, and then left, according to a preliminary investigation.
The experiment began at about 1pm and the blast occurred at about 3pm.
Zhang’s brother Zhang Jianjun, who is the registered legal representative of the wax company, has also been detained, but the academic is the “actual controller” of the company, the government said.
