Crew held for dumping garbage in river

POLICE have detained four crew from a ship allegedly dumping garbage along the Yangtze River.
Two officials with a garbage treatment company in neighboring Zhejiang were also held, police said yesterday.
The crew, including their leader surnamed Duan, was under criminal detention for allegedly violating China’s environmental protection law.
Zhejiang Tianshun garbage treatment company’s legal representative surnamed Ni and a shareholder surnamed Zhou were the officials involved.
The company had signed an agreement with Duan to let it transport the 1,900 tons of garbage to a power plant in upstream Anhui Province, but instead the crew had dumped the garbage in the river.
The incident threatened the water source on Chongming Island and was still under investigation, police said.
The island’s water management company has salvaged more than 20,000 packs of floating garbage near Dongfengxisha Reservoir, one of Shanghai’s four major water sources.
The reservoir supplied drinking water to 700,000 Chongming residents, Song Jian, deputy general manager with company, which is in charge of the garbage collection, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
“It will take another 10 days to clear all the floating garbage near the reservoir,” Song said.
“A large number of garbage was floated onto the shallow beach near the reservoir and onto reed marshes, which made the garbage collection challenging,” he added.
The floating garbage reappeared near the reservoir on Saturday morning.
Most of the garbage was household waste, including broken bottles and cans as well as clothing and quilts.
