Crash-death scooter driver sentenced
A scooter rider who caused an elderly woman’s death by crashing into her has been sentenced to one year in jail with a one-year reprieve for manslaughter, Changning District People’s Court said yesterday. Because a scooter is not classified as a motor vehicle, the man, surnamed Zheng, was charged with manslaughter rather than the crime of causing a traffic casualty.
Zheng was given a light penalty because he surrendered himself to police after the crash and paid the victim’s family 650,000 yuan in compensation.
On July 21 last year, Zheng got dust in his eyes as he rode his scooter to his office on Kaixuan Road in Changning District, causing him to run through a zebra crossing near Wuyi Road and crash into the victim, surnamed Chen. She fell to the ground, sustaining head injuries, and died two days later, the court said.
