Crackdown on illegal rides in Hongqiao
TWO drivers were caught illegally picking up passengers in Hongqiao Transportation Hub via a ride-hailing application on Wednesday.
Neither driver was using the vehicle or car plate that they had registered on the online platform, the city’s traffic law enforcement team said yesterday.
Eleven other drivers were also caught on the less serious charge of illegally taking passengers for profit via ride-hailing applications in the transportation hub on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Most of the drivers were from out of town and 10 of the vehicles did not have Shanghai car plates, and one had a local plate that was restricted to operate in suburban areas only.
The authority said one vehicle was seized on Wednesday night, with its driver facing a 10,000 yuan (US$1,500) penalty as well as the likelihood of his driving license being suspended for three to six months. Earlier on Wednesday, another driver was also caught trying to pick up people illegally.
Yesterday was the last day of seeking public opinion over the city’s draft rules on car hailing. The draft was issued by the city government on October 8.
According to the rules, only drivers with residency, or hukou, and who have vehicles with local plates are able to qualify for the car-hailing business.
