Crackdown on drivers saves lives

SHANGHAI police said yesterday a crackdown on traffic offenses begun in March had helped to reduce the number of traffic fatalities and almost halve the number of injuries, as well as reducing the figure for traffic accidents leading onto litigation.
In the past six months, the number of traffic fatalities fell 15 percent to 362 from the year-earlier period and the number of the injured dropped 49 percent to 125, according to statistics.
Also in the past six months, the figure for the number of traffic accidents that led to litigation dropped 28 percent to a total of 381 from the same period of last year.
“Traffic offenses are a major cause of accidents, and the ongoing crackdown aims to remove those dangerous factors from the road,” said Xing Peiyi, general chief of Shanghai traffic police.
But he added unlawful parking, illegal horn blaring, incorrect lane changing and driving on the wrong side of the road remained the biggest headaches for the police.
Police also said they would introduce a new mobile app in the near future that would enable observers to report offenders with videos taken on mobile phones.
