Crack team to safeguard Metro
THE city’s Metro network yesterday introduced a 100-member strong team to maintain order and weed out unwanted elements from the subway.
The full-time uniformed team will keep a watch on violators, especially beggars, vendors, those giving out fliers, ticket evaders and commuters misusing senior citizen cards.
A team of two, armed with law enforcement certificates, will keep a watch on the city’s 14 Metro lines.
They will travel on the trains and have been authorized to dish out fines or penalty.
According to the Shanghai Metro Management Regulation issued at the beginning of the year, violators can be fined between 50 yuan and 500 yuan (US$80.67).
The 100-strong team will be backed up by another 2,300 part-time Metro staff who will man the subway, according to Shanghai Shentong Group, the city’s Metro operator. Each of the city’s 333 subway stations (including the two Meglev stations) will have two part-time members on duty, who will be wearing armbands.
Four beggars, including two children, were caught by the enforcement team yesterday on Metro Line 1. They were warned and let off.
“We will try and persuade the violators first. If they refuse to listen to us and continue to be a public nuisance, we will fine them or call the police,” said Zhang Wei, one of the members of the Metro enforcement team.
According to Zhang, apart from beggars, illegal vendors on the subway have long been a nuisance, and will be the prime target of the team.
Commuters can dial Metro hotline 64370000 or report to police on their WeChat account “metropolice110.”
