Courier accused of murdering neighbor

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his neighbor in a dispute over money, prosecutors in Songjiang District said yesterday.
The suspect, 24-year-old Wu Zhong, a native of Gansu Province, is accused of killing 45-year-old Qin Fang of Jilin Province by hitting her about the head with a hammer and dumping her body in a river.
Qin operated an online gift shop from her home in Songjiang District and frequently asked neighbor Wu for help arranging her deliveries as he worked for a courier firm.
When Wu opened an online shop of his own last October, Qin offered to pay him 5,000 yuan (US$800) a month if he also carried her products.
Wu agreed, but when in January he asked Qin for the 15,000 yuan he claimed she owed him, she said she was unable to pay, prosecutors said.
Wu became angry and on January 21 tricked Qin into meeting him at a hotel. Qin was under the impression she was going to meet a potential client.
When Qin again refused to pay Wu the 15,000 yuan, he became enraged and attacked her, prosecutors said.
Pulling a hammer from a bag, he hit her repeatedly on the head, then strangled her, they said.
Wu then tried to cover up his crime by sending text messages to Qin’s colleagues from her mobile phone, saying she was going on a business trip.
He then left the hotel and returned later with cleaning products and a large suitcase.
After cleaning the room, he put Qin’s body into the case and carried it on his tricycle to a bridge on Husong Road. He then dumped the case into the river below, prosecutors said.
After two days of not hearing from Qin, her family contacted the police.
During their investigation, officers spoke to the driver of an unlicensed taxi who said he had taken Wu and Qin to the hotel.
After studying footage from surveillance cameras at the hotel, police took Wu into custody.
