Couple charged with running illegal oil processing plant
HUSBAND and wife owners of a multi-million yuan waste oil processing operation stood trial yesterday charged with running an illegal business.
The couple, surnamed Xiao and Li, ran the plant in Luodian Town, the Baoshan District People’s Court heard.
According to prosecutors, the amount of money related to the business founded by Xiao and Li in 2010 reached 47 million yuan (US$7.65 million.)
Also facing charges related to running an illegal business were two employees, surnamed Cai and Shi, and a man surnamed Chen, who bought processed oil from the couple.
The court heard that Xiao and Li bought waste oil from auto centers and after filtration sold it to Chen, who worked for a new energy company in Fujian Province.
Xiao told the court that in a month he would process 300 tons of oil and made a profit of 40 to 50 yuan per ton.
The Fujian company said it bought some 2,000 tons of oil from the factory.
Cai and Shi were employed to load and unload the oil.
Xiao claimed that he thought his factory was qualified to process waste oil as Chen gave him copies of his company’s certificates on dealing with dangerous waste.
Li told the judge that her only involvement in the business was cleaning in the plant and cooking meals for staff.
Cai and Shi said they knew nothing about the business.
No verdict was returned.
