Corrupt officials punished harshly, city's chief prosecutor says

A total of 16 bureau directors in Shanghai have gone on trial for corruption in the last five years and more than half have been sent to prison for at least 10 years, the city's chief prosecutor said today.

The directors were found either abusing their power or trading power for money between 2009 and 2013, Chen Xu, chief prosecutor of the Shanghai People's Procuratorate told the Shanghai People's Congress.

He said 12 officials had been found guilty and sentenced. Three were handed a suspended death sentence or life term, seven were given 10 years in prison and two were put behind bars for at least five years, Chen said.

The four other officials charged with corruption had not yet been tried.

Major cases included the trial of Chen Meng, former deputy governor of Putuo District. He was found guilty of accepting 15 million yuan in bribes. He got a two-year suspended death sentence in 2012.
