Conjoined babies await surgery
DOCTORS at the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University are expected to carry out emergency surgery on newborn conjoined twin girls within the next few days.
The babies were born on Tuesday night at the People’s Hospital of Ningdu County in Ganzhou, east China’s Jiangxi Province. They are connected by their buttocks and genitals.
Zeng Beijing, the girls’ father, said he was told by doctors in Ganzhou that they lacked the expertise to carry out such a procedure and that he should take the infants to Shanghai.
A doctor at the Shanghai hospital said there is a real urgency to separate the girls as the way in which they are joined is potentially life threatening.
Surgeons and other experts are trying to agree on the best course of action, he said.
Zeng said that before the babies were born, he and his wife had no idea they were conjoined.
“At the ante-natal checkups we were just told they were twins,” he said.
