Complaints over Apple ‘jump sharply’

COMPLAINTS over products and after-sales service from Apple Shanghai surged nearly six times between October 1 and November 30 compared with the same period last year, the city’s consumer rights protection commission said yesterday.

The major problems reported were unexpected power-off issues, batteries combusting and stolen accounts, the commission said. About 860 of the complaints were over the power issue which has struck iPhone 6 and 6s models around the world.

The commission said it had received 1,221 complaints about Apple Shanghai in the two months to November 30. The commission said this was nearly six times higher than the same period last year, but did not give a figure for 2015. And there were 2,763 complaints from January 1 to November 30 — double the same period last year, it said.

Apple could not be immediately contacted for comment on the commission’s report.

The power problems involve iPhones powering off automatically despite a significant charge remaining, or not powering up even when plugged in. Apple offered free battery replacement for some iPhones manufactured between September and October last year.

But some consumers complained to the commission of delays receiving replacements.

A consumer surnamed Wu said when she asked for a replacement at an Apple after-sales service center she was told they were out of stock.

The commission said eight consumers had complained in the October-November period their iPhones had suddenly combusted.

A consumer surnamed Chen told the commission her iPhone 6s Plus exploded in August.

“The screen was shattered, and the shell and battery turned black,” the commission quoted her saying. It said Apple replaced the phone but did not explain the reason for the explosion.

The commission has asked Apple to conduct a technical check of its smart phone models with problems and offer solutions to consumers.
