Compensation given to cruise passengers

HNA Cruises, the operator of the Chinese cruise liner Henna, said on Monday that it will give some 1,800 passengers each 200 yuan (US$32.25) to compensate for the cancelation of their trip to Fukuoka, Japan.

The offer came after more than 300 tourists refused to leave the ship on Monday morning following a trip reportedly marred by scheduling problems and other issues.

The ship was originally scheduled to leave the International Passenger Transport Center of Shanghai Port in Hongkou District on the evening of April 1, but was delayed for about 12 hours.

“Dense fog shrouded Shanghai on April 1 and 2, thus we are informed by maritime affairs authorities not to leave the port,” said Jiang Yushen, spokesman of the company.

The ship’s departure was rescheduled for the afternoon of April 2, and all tourists were informed that the trip would be rerouted to Nagasaki, Jiang said.

According to Jiang, only about 10 tourists pulled out of the trip before the ship left Shanghai, while the remaining passengers remained on board the ship.

A passenger surnamed Wang told thepaper.cn that an excursion scheduled to last seven to eight hours in Sasebo, Nagasaki, was cut to four hours.

“The whole trip was nothing but chaos since its start,” Wang complained, adding that facilities on the ship for swimming and karaoke were not open.

“I did nothing on the ship except eat and sleep, and it was a horrible experience,” she said.

Other passengers said people who boarded the ship late had nothing to eat and there were even fights between crew members and tourists. Others claimed that they wanted to appreciate the cherry blossoms in Japan but were taken shopping by tour guides in Sasebo instead.

Wang refused to leave the ship after it arrived at the Wusong International Cruise Ship Terminal in Baoshan District at 8am on Monday, asking for compensation along with some 300 other tourists.

They left the ship about 5pm after reaching an agreement with the cruise company.

Due to the confrontation, a group of tourists who were scheduled to board the ship at 5pm on Monday were left stranded in the port’s waiting hall.
