Chongming unveils strategy to be ‘world class eco-island’ by 2040

CHONGMING Island aims to become an important bird habitat and a protected area for large varieties of natural resources, the district government said yesterday.

The city’s top planning body and the Chongming government jointly released the plan for the island’s development through 2040 to achieve the aim of becoming a “world class ecological island.”

The Dongtan Wetland Park, a national natural reserve for birds covering about 102.4 square kilometers, becomes a top-level protected zone, with all development prohibited.

The wetland park is one of the city’s major stopovers for migratory birds flying south for the winter.

The lands surrounding the park and a natural reserve zone near the mouth of the Yangtze for Chinese sturgeon will become a secondary protected zone.

It also includes the city’s two major reservoirs, Dongfeng Xisha and Qingcaosha, as well as the Dongping Forest Park.

Farmlands, forests, other wetlands, lakes and waterways will also be protected from major construction and development.

Guangming Street in Buzhen Town and Caopeng Village in Sanxing Town have also been listed as historic protected zones.

Buzhen dates to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) when residents set up fortresses in the town to fight against Japanese pirates.

Caopeng (thatched shack) Village features distinctive architectural styles and traditional shacks.

The island’s population target by 2040 remains the same as recently set for 2020 — limited to 700,000, with 80 percent living in urban areas.

Natural wetlands will account for 45 percent of the total territory of the island by 2040, compared with 38 percent currently. Forest cover will increased to 35 percent from 22 percent.

The district government aims to enhance the island’s ecology to make it an important protective ecological buffer for Shanghai.

Highways and the subway will be developed to connect the island with other parts of the city. The district government aims to shorten the distance between the city and the island to within an hour by either car or subway.
