Children’s clothes, toys fail to pass muster

CHILDREN’S clothing made by Mars Shanghai, and toys and children’s shoes sold at stores like Jiuguang and Isetan failed quality tests, the city’s market watchdog said yesterday.

Children’s T-shirts and baby clothing made by Mars Shanghai under the “m&m” brand were found to have poor color fastness to water and sweat stains, while the latter also had poor color fastness to saliva, said the Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau.

Clothes with poor color fastness can bleed dye onto the skin, which can be harmful, the bureau said.

Mars Shanghai said the two batches of clothing had been removed from sale, and that there were no problems with its other products.

The bureau checked 62 batches of children’s clothing, and found 10 to be substandard.

These included four sorts of skirts, trousers and coats bearing the brands “Kenzo” and “cnd” and sold at Parkson Department Store on Huaihai Road M. These failed for fiber content and poor color fastness to sweat stains.

Meanwhile, the bureau also checked 85 batches of toys, and found 36 percent of them substandard.

A batch of plush toys sold at Jiuguang Department Store failed because the plastic packaging was too thin.

“Too-thin plastic packages will probably lead to breathing difficulties in children and suffocation in serious cases if children put them on their faces,” said Zhang Xiaonan, an inspector of National Center for Quality Supervision and Testing of Toys.

Two batches of toys sold at Carrefour’s Quyang outlets and a batch of toys sold at the Chuanchang outlet of Lotus were found to have the same problem.

A batch of wooden toys sold at Isetan Shopping Center on Nanjing Road W. were found to have problems with their instructions, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, two batches of children’s shoes sold at Isetan had problems of “peel strength,” which can lead to them slipping, the bureau said.

Five batches of children’s shoes sold at Jiuguang failed for “external bottom hardness,” while a batch of shoes on sale at Takashimaya Department Store had the same problem.
