Cherries are blooming for major festival
THE annual Cherry Blossom Festival at Gucun Park in Baoshan District will start on March 15 and run into mid-April as part of the northern district’s ambition to promote eco-tourism over its traditional iron-steel base.
About 1.6 million people visited during the month-long festival last year. A record 168,000 flocked to the park on its peak day.
The park has more than 12,000 cherry blossom trees, which will start blooming from mid-March, said Huang Zhende, a senior official with the district’s greenery bureau.
This year more than 100,000 people are expected each day. More are expected to come on the first weekend of the festival when most of the cherry flowers will bloom, Huang said.
