Chat buddies behind bars
TWO people who met via the WeChat social media app have been detained on suspicion of committing seven burglaries involving nearly 100,000 yuan (US$16,000) worth of goods earlier this year in Shanghai, police said yesterday.
The two suspects, surnamed Yang — a migrant worker living in Shanghai — and Long — from Jiangxi Province — met via the smartphone app in January. They had both served prison time in the past for theft and became friends, police said. Yang invited Long to Shanghai shortly before the Chinese New Year, where they worked together on a number of house burglaries in Yangpu and Songjiang districts, police said.
