Cash for boy hurt in bus rush
A SCHOOLBOY who suffered a broken foot as passengers rushed to get off a bus has been awarded 56,000 yuan (US$9,160) compensation.
The settlement for the sixth-grader followed mediation, the Jiading District People’s Court said yesterday.
The court heard that the boy, identified as “Binbin,” was traveling home by bus as usual after school in February when the accident occurred.
As the bus was very crowded, he had to stand close to the bus door and when it swung open his left foot became trapped.
Binbin was knocked over as other passengers rushed to get off and fell to the ground outside with his foot still caught in the bus, the court heard.
Supporting himself by his right hand on the ground, the boy used his left hand to grab at the door.
He managed to haul himself back onto the bus but after getting off at his stop found that he couldn’t move his foot.
Students standing nearby helped Binbin get his mother. She took her son to hospital and called police.
It was reported that Binbin suffered a serious fracture to his left foot. His current condition was not disclosed.
His parents claimed that the bus company, which was not named, was at fault for failing to maintain order on the bus, which led to their son’s injury.
They demanded compensation of more than 70,000 yuan.
However, the bus company said it was only willing to pay the parents 15 percent of that sum, arguing that the incident was caused by other passengers’ actions.
Surveillance camera footage of the incident was played during the trial before the court persuaded the two sides to agree to mediation.
Children in the sixth grade in China are usually aged around 12 or 13.
