Cancer chemicals found in sandals
BATCHES of leather sandals checked by the city’s quality watchdog were found to contain high levels of carcinogenic substances, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said yesterday.
One batch was found to contain excessive levels of formaldehyde, used in many materials, while three batches contained excessive amounts of hexavalent chromium — an ingredient in pigments in dyes, paints, inks and plastics. The bureau did not name the brands, but has ordered the producers concerned to improve their quality control and eliminate safety hazards.
