Cabbie pays heavy price for sexual harassment

A taxi driver who sexually harassed a 14-year-old girl on Monday has been placed in detention for 10 days by police in Hongkou District.

The driver, surnamed Shi, who was fired by the company on Monday, has been banned from working as a taxi driver for five years and has had his license revoked.

“The driver was given the administrative punishment for maliciously teasing and insulting his passenger, which we consider a grave offense,” the city’s Traffic Law Enforcement Office said in a statement yesterday.

The offense will be registered on Shi’s personal credit record, according to the office, which said that it had also issued a warning to Jinjiang Taxi Company, Shi’s employer.

Police said they contacted the company after receiving a complaint on Monday and later spoke to the girl.

The girl said she was taking the taxi home from school early because she felt ill and was seated in the front seat when the driver put his hand on her thigh.

The girl took a picture of his hand on her person with her mobile phone and texted it to her mother.

“The driver keeps touching me,” she wrote.

Police said the taxi driver admitted touching the girl.
