Bus crash driver charged
THE driver of a bus that was involved in a fatal accident last year was yesterday formally charged with “causing traffic casualties,” the Changning District People’s Procuratorate said.
Shen Zhilin was at the wheel of a No. 44 bus on June 10 last year when the vehicle clipped the median strip on Yan’an Road W. in Changning and crashed into a pillar.
Two passengers were killed in the crash and 20 people, including passengers, pedestrians and Shen himself were injured, several of them seriously, police said at the time.
Prosecutors yesterday declined to say why it had taken more than 10 months to issue a formal charge, though it was reported earlier that the driver had been seriously injured.
It did not say when he would face trial.
Under Chinese law, the crime of causing traffic casualties carries a maximum penalty of seven years in prison.
