Brother killed in fighting after quarrel

A man who strangled his brother to death has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for murder.

The defendant, surnamed Xue, 56, and his family lived with his brother, a 58-year-old jobless bachelor and their bedridden mother. According to the Pudong New Area People’s Court, the elder brother constantly asked for money that he then squandered on gambling, causing the two men to quarrel.

Last June 11, when they had finished dinner, the brothers quarreled again. Xue said his brother had sworn at him and beat him. Xue retaliated and pushed his brother onto a chair, grabbed him by the throat and squeezed until his brother stopped breathing.

Xue, realizing he had killed his brother, told his son to alert police.

At the court, Xue expressed his regret and was granted a lighter sentence because he had admitted guilt and had handed himself over to police, the court said.
