Bridge project progressing well
A PROJECT to restore Zhejiang Road Bridge, which was lifted from its foundations and floated down Suzhou Creek to a repair yard in May, is progressing well despite it being in a worse state than first thought.
“We had 50 people working on the scheme, but have had to recruit more to ensure we meet our deadline of having the bridge back and working by the end of the year,” said project manager Qian Cheng from the Shanghai Municipal Engineering Design Institute.
“The job has proved to be far more complicated than we expected, and teams have been working around the clock to get everything done,” he told Shanghai Daily.
One of the most laborious aspects of the job is the replacement of 10,000 rivets, most of which had completely rusted over after more than a century in the wet conditions, he said.
The underside of the 107-year-old bridge has been badly eroded, and while engineers and technicians are doing their best to restore as much of the original structure as possible, several sections need to be completely replaced, Qian said.
“We are working with a factory in Jiangsu Province, which is fabricating a number of new parts,” he said.
Despite the difficulties, Qian said the project was making good progress.
“We’ve been working for just over a month and we’re about 30 percent of the way through,” he said.
