Brain tumor man faces going back to prison

A MAN released from prison to receive treatment for a brain tumor faces going back behind bars as he borrowed money he’s unlikely to repay during his period of freedom.
Songjiang District prosecutors said yesterday that the man, surnamed Chen, should return to jail in accordance with recent state court parole regulations.
Under these, Songjiang prosecutors have increased supervision of individuals in Chen’s situation.
He was jailed for 13 years in 2007 for embezzling more than 2 million yuan (US$324,000) through the engineering company he co-founded.
Chen was released five years later to get treatment for a brain tumor and other health issues.
Under the terms, Chen, who is in his late 50s, would return to prison if medical treatment proved successful.
Initially, Chen abided by the court’s terms, keeping appointments to receive guidance.
But later Chen started to borrow money from relatives and friends and soon spent it all, according to prosecutors.
Chen is then said to have moved from place to place to evade detection.
Songjiang prosecutors obtained approval from prison authorities for the cancellation of Chen’s parole.
Police traced Chen online and he was arrested.
No decision was announced yesterday. No details were given on his health.
