Better water coming Songjiang’s way

SONGJIANG District yesterday began replacing rusty pipelines at older residential communities to improve tap water quality for about 300,000 residents.
More than 200 neighborhoods with about 140 residential buildings will have their tap water pipelines renovated in the outskirt district by 2018, water authority officials said. All the costs, including renovation and maintenance, will be borne by the district government.
The renovation program will cover all residential buildings built in and before 2000, said an official with the district water authority.
It will involve changing rusty pipelines, coating water tanks with a membrane as well as installing water quality monitoring facilities. Exposed pipes, valves and meters in residential buildings have been properly insulated and protected with non-toxic, odorless, fireproof and waterproof materials.
The district water authority said water supply companies would take over the maintenance and repairing of pipes after the renovation was completed.
Residents had complained about tap water quality in the district, mainly because of the old pipes, the official said. They would notice clearer water from their taps once the renovation work was completed, he added.
Currently, the district draws much of its tap water from the middle Huangpu River, which has poor quality as well as a high pollution risk.
Jinze Reservoir on the upstream section of Huangpu River, however, has started supplying cleaner water to some 6.7 million residents in the city’s suburban districts. Songjiang residents would receive the better quality water from Jinze around early next month, Shanghai Water Authority said.
