Bengal tiger pair meet visitors at Shanghai Zoo on International Tiger Day

TWO Bengal tigers presented by the Yunnan Wildlife Park meet visitors at the Shanghai Zoo today.

The two tigers, named "Yunyun" and "Nannan", are aged four and three years old respectively.

Yunyun, male, is still trying to get accustomed to Shanghai's climate because it is very hot today, while "Nannan" has adapted to the new environment and acts very active, zoo keepers said. The zoo did not have Bengal tigers before their arrival and it is hoped that they would breed at the zoo in the future. Ice has been placed at their cages to help them cool down, and steaks have been prepared for them by the zoo.

The endangered Bengal tiger is China's top-level protected wildlife and it is estimated that there are just about 2,500 wild Bengal tigers in the world now. Today marks the International Tiger Day, an annual event to raise awareness for tiger conservation.
