Beijing, Shanghai offer tax refunds to overseas tourists

OVERSEAS tourists will from tomorrow be entitled to tax refunds on selected purchases made in Shanghai on their departure from the country, the General Administration of Customs of China said yesterday.

The 11 percent VAT rebate applies to purchases of 500 yuan (US$80) or more made on a single day at a participating store, it said, without naming the shops involved.

Foreign tourists and those from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who stay in the Chinese mainland for no more than 183 days can receive a rebate of 11 percent on consumer goods purchased at designated department stores, according to a statement by the Ministry of Finance earlier this year.

Refunds can be claimed on departure, which must be within 90 days of the purchases being made.

The introduction of the new scheme, which launches concurrently in Beijing, follows a trial program introduced in 2011 in south China’s Hainan Province.
