BBC report prompts probe into ‘Apple’ firm

LABOR authorities said yesterday they have spoken to an electronics manufacturing company in the Pudong New Area that supplies tech giant Apple Inc after it was accused in a BBC TV program of mistreating its workers.

According to an undercover report by the broadcaster’s Panorama team, Taiwan-based Pegatron Corp “failed to protect workers” at the plant.

Pudong labor officials yesterday visited the factory, but the firm, which employs about 65,000 people, denied the allegations, Shanghai Television reported.

“Employees have a lunch break and get a 10-minute rest every two hours,” said Sun Yeyun, a deputy general manager at the factory.

In the BBC program, several workers appeared to be asleep at their machines, but Sun said they were simply “taking their breaks at the time of being filmed.”

She also dismissed claims made that as many as 12 workers were forced to share a small dormitory room.

When an STV reporter asked to view the accommodation, Sun declined.

Last year, four people, including a 15-year-old boy, died at the plant, an event that focused attention on conditions at Apple contractors in China.

STV said that it had been told that the plant was severely punished last year for labor breaches, but that it had not been given the full details.

Wang Guolai, deputy director of the Pudong labor department, was quoted as saying that a thorough investigation into the allegations is under way.
