Award for expat traffic volunteer

A 38-year-old expatriate teacher at Shanghai Community International School yesterday received an Exemplary Resident in Promoting Traffic Rules award from the city government.
“I’m more than happy to take part in any activity that’s beneficial to the city,” said Daniel Howard from the US.
Nine other residents, including bus and taxi drivers and non-governmental organization members, received the same award, said officials
Changning Police told Shanghai Daily that about 20 expats have been working as traffic volunteers in the district since the city’s ongoing road safety campaign kicked off in March.
Wearing an orange vest and clutching a yellow flag and a stack of leaflets, Howard recently joined Chinese volunteers and a traffic police officer at the intersection of Hongqiao Road and Yili Road in Changning District.
“Some people probably thought it was a bit unusual to see a foreigner working as a volunteer, and a number of them stopped and giggled at me, but everybody was very cooperative,” Howard recalled.
He said his daughter thinks it’s funny that he’s wearing the orange uniform because people donning them are usually much older.
“But she also sees that her father helps with the traffic, that he helps people cross the streets,” he added.
Howard said fellow expats often ask him about the traffic rules, especially those governing e-bikes and scooters, and the ongoing traffic safety crackdown.
“Everybody is happy to see increased law enforcement and more orderly traffic,” he said.
Having been living in Shanghai for 14 years, Howard said the city’s traffic culture has improved.
“When I first came here, it was not unusual to see very outrageous driving, but society has developed to the point that people are driving in a more orderly way,” he said. “I don’t think Shanghai has terrible traffic.”
