Authorities invite public to record traffic offenses

RESIDENTS can now report traffic offenses captured with digital video recorders installed in their cars via a new platform on the Shanghai Traffic Police website.

Whistleblowers can upload the video files, which must be under 60 seconds in length and 100M in size, within three days of the offense being committed. The videos must contain indicators of where the offense occurred, such as road signs or landmarks.

As of 3pm yesterday, 17 videos had been uploaded to the new platform, police said.

Police said they will take action based on the reports within 15 business days and give feedback to the whistleblowers, who will be able to check the status of the investigation on the same platform.

“The cloud service we cooperate with allows 31,000 videos of 100M in size each within a three-day period,” said Feng Kairen, vice chief of Shanghai Traffic Police.

Feng said the platform will potentially be expanded to accommodate uploaded videos taken by mobile phones, but those taken with DVRs will take priority because of the superior picture quality.

“It’s also safer to record traffic offenses with DVRs when sitting in cars than to record them with phones on foot,” he said.

Those who report offenses will not be rewarded, but those who make false claims will be punished, police warned.

The address of the Chinese-only web platform is http://sh.122.gov.cn/jb.
