Arrested for ‘luxury spirit theft’

A 60-year-old man has been arrested for stealing over 300,000 yuan (US$44,000) worth of luxury baijiu, or white spirit, and selling it to wine dealers, police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Min, said he had discovered boxes of baijiu stored in a locked room inside an underground parking lot on April 1.

He used an e-bike to remove the bottles that night and on April 3.

The owner of the bottles, which included Moutai and Wuliangye brands, runs a grocery store on Guoshun Road E. in Yangpu District.

The owner surnamed Ye called the police on April 13 when he found all the bottles had gone.

Police said they soon spotted the suspect from street surveillance cameras and found that he had initially hidden the bottles in bushes and carted them away soon after in a white minivan.

Min said he had sold seven boxes of baijiu for 12,600 yuan to a wine dealer surnamed Meng and stored the rest of the stolen liquor in private apartments in Yangpu and Putuo districts.

Meng had also been arrested, police said.
