Arrest after barrels of methanol found
A man in suburban Shanghai has been arrested for illegally storing eight tons of methanol, police said yesterday.
The methanol was stored in 2-meter-tall plastic barrels in a factory on Fengsong Road, Huaxin Town, Qingpu District. Police discovered the barrels last week in an inspection of rented factories, sheds and container trucks in the area.
Police said the methanol turned out to have a concentration of 99.9 percent making it highly susceptible to burning and explosion at room temperature.
The suspect, an out-of-town resident surnamed Zhou, did not possess the legally required licenses for transporting and selling methanol, which is a listed dangerous material in China.
Police said they were still investigating the origin of the methanol. If criminally convicted, Zhou could face at least three years in prison.
