Anti-terrorism officers test their skills

SHANGHAI police’s new anti-terrorism tactical team yesterday took part in its first public drill since it was established at the beginning of last year.

The team members tested their skills in a range of dangerous scenarios, ranging from knife-wielding attackers randomly targeting people to terrorists using vehicles as weapons in crowded public places.

“The purpose of the drill is to showcase the training achievements of the police tactical team and demonstrate our confidence in our ability to combat criminals and terrorists so as to make residents feel safe,” said Rui Minghua, an official in charge of police patrols at Shanghai Public Security Bureau.

The drill was held at the Shanghai Police Education and Training Center’s Xinzhuang base in the southwestern part of the city and was broadcast live by local media.

“In real-life scenarios, the captain of a sub-team of the force will automatically assume command of patrol officers, traffic policemen and SWAT members on the scene,” Rui said.

The team has been equipped submachine guns, automatic pistols, tear gas, tactical flashlights, shields and tire spikes.

There are 142 sub-teams of five members on duty in all districts in Shanghai.

Officials told Shanghai Daily that the sub-teams are not as heavily armed as SWAT teams, but they have the advantage of patrolling in teams of five. Swat members usually patrol solo or in pairs.

Officials said the anti-terrorism tactical team will be able to reach incident scenes, such as tourist spots and transportation hubs, within five minutes of being called.

Meanwhile, police at the drill site exhibited an upgraded patrol car that will soon be entering service.

Unlike the current model, the new car has a rotatable seat, a surveillance camera with a 360-degree view and metal window screens to protect officers in public unrest situations.
