All spots taken, shorter runs prove as popular as marathon

REGISTRATION for the Shanghai International Marathon in November were closed after all the 17,000 spots for the 10k race and 5k health run were filled yesterday.

The 7,000 available places for the 10km run and 10,000 for 5km proved as popular as the 42km full marathon and 21km half-marathon with all places filled up by 12:50pm, the race organizers said yesterday.

A technical member of the marathon’s official website said over 400,000 people used over 7 million browsers for registration yesterday.

“The applicants seemed more aware after Monday’s registration (for full and half-marathon). A large number of them opened more than one browser at the same time to boost their chances of taking a spot,” the staff member said.

Liu Yitao, an amateur runner who works for a consultant company, said he was lucky to secure a place in the 5k health run. He logged in to Shanghai Marathon’s official website at 9am, and found 20,000 people ahead of him. But after waiting for half an hour, he successfully registered for the 5k run.

“I had prepared myself mentally about my chances after reading the news about the popularity for full and half-marathon on Monday,” Liu said. “But luck was on my side, and I’ll be taking part in a running event for the first time.”

Liu said some of his colleagues had wanted to take part in the 5k run together, but only a few managed to make it.

Several million tried to register for the full and half-marathon on Monday. All 16,000 available places were snapped up in a few hours.

“You can start and stop any time, which suits white collar workers who can’t find time for gym or other sports,” said Qin Jiexin, who usually runs in the night in her neighborhood. “With an increasing number of participants, running has become a kind of fashion now.”

All events will start from Chen Yi Square on the Bund on November 2.

The 10k race will end at Fuxing Park and the 5k health run at Jing’an Sculpture Park.
