Airports see jump in holiday passengers

IT was a busy Spring Festival for air-traffic controllers.
More than 741,000 travellers departed from or entered the country via ShanghaiÕs airports over the holiday, up by 5.8 percent over last year.
About 80 percent of the 392,000 outbound travellers were Chinese citizens, and the most popular overseas destinations were South Korea and Southeast Asia, the General Station of Shanghai Immigration Inspection said.
More than 200 foreign tourists benefitted from the new six-day visa-free transit policy, which came into effect on January 30 and applies to citizens from 51 countries.
The passenger throughput at the cityÕs two airports, Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao Airport, exceeded one million people during the holiday, reaching its daily peak on Saturday with 310,000 passengers.
The traffic volume on Spring Festival Eve is usually lower than average, as most people are at home with their families. However, this year Pudong International Airport saw its highest traffic volume on Spring Festival Eve in 10 years, with more than 92,000 passengers, up by nearly 14 percent over 2015.
