Airport’s record passenger traffic

MORE than 5 million passengers — a record — traveled through Pudong International Airport this summer.

The airport’s frontier inspection station said passenger traffic recorded from July 1 to August 15 rose 2 percent compared with the same period a year earlier.

Over the period, 26 days were recorded with the number of passengers hitting 110,000 or more. August 10 was the peak day for traffic, with 125,000 passengers departing or arriving through Pudong airport.

Nearly 440,000 of the 2.2 million inbound passengers used the self-service immigration clearance channel, taking an average of 10 seconds to be processed. Among them, 390,000 were mainland residents, up 50 percent from the same period last year. The service is not available to foreigners.

By the end of this month, the airport will start to build 23 more self-service immigration clearance channels, up from the current 15, and they will be put into use by the end of this year to better serve passengers.

About 4,100 foreign visitors took up the option of the 114-hour, visa-free transit policy offered at the airport, the inspection station said.

Pudong has been the most popular airport on the Chinese mainland for 14 years.

According to the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection, more than 6 million travelers have passed through Shanghai’s airports and ports since July 1, up 2.5 percent year on year.

The station has recorded a steady increase in the number of freight and air passengers over five years, at an average of 12 percent of increase year by year. Last year, the total number reached 42.42 million.

Meanwhile, More than 26,000 freight passengers traveling through Shanghai ports on Thursday, which made daily record of history in Chinese mainland.

According to the ports, there have been 670,000 inbound and outbound passengers during this summer vacation.
